Is There Radon Gas In Your Home?

Although it is present to some extent in nearly all homes in our region, the exact level of radon gas can vary greatly. It is a colourless, odourless, tasteless and radioactive by-product of decaying uranium deposits within our soil. These uranium deposits are generally unpredictable and radon gas levels within homes are just as such. In southern Ontario it boils down to a complex combination of local geology consisting of uranium-rich bedrock, high soil permeability, and modern building practices which seal our homes tighter for heating in cold climates.

When radon gas meets fresh air in the outdoors, it is quickly dissipated to near harmless levels.  When it seeps through cracks in a home’s slab or foundation it can become trapped inside and accumulate to hazardous levels. Health Canada lists radon in the home as the #1 leading risk factor for lung cancer in non-smokers, accounting for an estimated 16% of lung cancer deaths. The only way to accurately predict the risk that radon gas presents in your home is with C-NRPP certified testing.

Testing Services

Long-Term Test (recommended)
$219.99

91 day C-NRPP Certified test for long-term average exposure and best accuracy. Required when applying for mitigation funding through the Tarion Home Warranty or organizations such as the Canadian Lung Association. Includes installation and test pick-up, as well as an ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory analysis of your test results.

Short-Term Test
$149.99

A short-term (3 - 7 day) test can provide quick peace of mind if your home has never been tested. At Radon River we only use C-NRPP approved, professional grade and calibrated ERMs (electronic radon monitors) for our short-term tests. These devices offer real-time data transfer and highly sensitive readings, allowing for hour-by-hour monitoring of changes in the environment which may alter radon levels, such as humidity, barometric pressure, VOCs, etc.

A detailed report will be emailed within 24-hours of test completion. Prices range from $149.99 to $259.99 depending on the test duration.

Short-Term & Long-Term Test Bundle
$276.99

Have a technician install a long-term (91 day) test and a short-term (3 day) test during the same visit for a 25% discount on combined services. Radon River will return to pick-up the short-term test after 3 days, with a written report of your results emailed within 24 hours of pick-up. After 91 days a technician will return again to pick up the long term test and mail to an accredited laboratory. You will receive an ISO/IEC 17025 Lab Analysis outlining your long term test results for best accuracy.

*The long-term test remains the most accurate and recommended method of testing, with the main drawback being delayed results due to the inability to read data in real-time. This bundled option is designed to provide faster results for your peace of mind while still ensuring a long-term average is recorded and lab-analyzed for best accuracy.

Professional Radon Mitigation Systems

Health Canada’s Guidelines

Health Canada recommends a long term (90+ day) test to accurately represent your average radon exposure, which can fluctuate day by day. Test results of 200 Bq/m3 or higher are considered concerning and a radon mitigation system is recommended. Some agencies such as the World Health Organization consider levels of 100 Bq/m3 or higher means for mitigation, but ultimately, the decision to mitigate belongs to the homeowner.

Radon Mitigation Systems

In order to reduce radon levels in your home, Radon River offers a solution known as Active Sub-Slab Depressurization (ASD). Using a dedicated and industry standard radon fan, we can create a negative pressure point in the soil beneath your home to draw radon up and exhaust it outside your home where it is quickly dissipated by fresh air. If you’ve purchased your home new, directly from a builder in the last 7 years, you’re likely covered under the Tarion Home Warranty for full reimbursement on our radon mitigation system. Regardless of the age of your home, if you are interested in having a radon mitigation system installed our experts will be happy to help. Submit a contact form for a free on-site consultation and we will get back to you within 1 business day.

Our Promise

At Radon River we don’t believe in selling unnecessary products or services to our customers. We believe that all homes should be tested at least every 2 years, but not every home requires a mitigation system. An accurate C-NRPP certified test is the only way to be sure. If you decide to have a mitigation system installed, a post-installment test is included for verified reduction in radon levels below 100Bq/m3. If you book testing and mitigation services with Radon River, we will waive all testing fees as a discount toward your mitigation system install.

Meet the Founder

I’m Isaac, owner of Radon River Environmental based in Guelph, Ontario. We’re a home service based business educating homeowners on the risks of radon gas and offering professional testing and radon mitigation services across Southern Ontario. I have over five years of hands-on experience as an environmental field technician and landscape construction professional. Having grown up between Wellington County and the City of Guelph, I later traveled the country planting more than a half-million seedlings on remote reforestation projects across British Columbia and northern Alberta while pursuing an education in Conservation Biology. Returning home at the age of 23, I began finding ways to serve the community that once raised me. Radon River and the work we bring to our community represents the culmination of these efforts.
