In 1898, Marie and Pierre Curie isolated the radioactive elements polonium and radium, opening an entirely new field of scientific research. Just a few years later, in 1900, German physicist Friedrich Ernst Dorn observed that radium produced an invisible radioactive gas. He referred to it as the "radium emanation."
Scientists would later determine that this mysterious gas was actually a new element. In 1923, it officially received the name radon, derived from the element radium from which it originates.
Canada's Early Connection to Radon
Canada has played an important role in the history of uranium mining and, by extension, our understanding of radon exposure.
One of the most significant locations was the Eldorado Mine near Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories. Beginning in the 1930s, the mine became one of the world's most important sources of uranium and radium.
During the early decades of uranium mining, little was known about the long-term health effects of breathing radon gas and its radioactive decay products. Like miners in several countries around the world, many Canadian uranium miners worked in poorly ventilated underground environments where radon concentrations could become extremely high.
